Our insulated conservatory roof panels are UK made boards cut to the size of your roof, laid onto the frame you already own in place of polycarbonate or glass. Two aluminium skins sandwich 75 mm of foam, for a U-value near 0.43 W/m²K, about 80 percent less heat escaping than through 16 mm polycarbonate. Fitted roofs start at £3,000, and typical jobs land between £3,000 and £7,500.
Inside one of our panels
Think of each panel as three layers pressed and glued into a single rigid sheet. It rests on your roof bars exactly where the old sheets or glass units used to be. We do not build anything underneath the old covering, because the old covering is stripped off first.
- Top layer: an aluminium sheet with a factory finish in your colour. Rain runs straight off, much of the sun bounces away, and it will not go yellow the way ageing polycarbonate does.
- Middle layer: 75 mm of extruded polystyrene (XPS) foam. Its cells are closed, so it cannot absorb water, and nearly all of the insulating work happens here.
- Bottom layer: a white aluminium sheet that forms the ceiling of the room. It reflects daylight well and arrives finished, so there is nothing to plaster or paint.
Where the 75 mm figure comes from
A panel's U-value depends on two things: how thick the foam is and how well that foam resists heat. Ours conducts at 0.034 W/mK, so the working is 1 / (0.14 + 0.075 / 0.034), which comes out at roughly 0.43 W/m²K. Plenty of panels sold in the UK are only 25 mm to 35 mm deep, and with similar foam they land somewhere around 0.85 to 1.15. Our panel thickness guide sets out the sums for every common depth.
The difference in heat loss
To work out the heat leaving through a roof, multiply its U-value by the area and then by the gap between indoor and outdoor temperature. Below we have used a 12 m² roof, a room at 20°C and 0°C outside, which is an ordinary cold evening across most of the country.
| Current roof covering | U-value (W/m²K) | Heat escaping, 12 m² |
|---|---|---|
| Polycarbonate, 16 mm | 2.3 | 552 W |
| Polycarbonate, 25 mm | 1.6 | 384 W |
| Polycarbonate, 35 mm | 1.4 | 336 W |
| Pre-2002 double glazed roof | 2.8 | 672 W |
| Current low-e roof glass | 1.0 to 1.2 | 240 W to 288 W |
| Eco Tech 75 mm panels | 0.43 | 103 W |
Spread that across a full winter and the numbers grow. With England averaging roughly 2,150 heating degree days, that same 12 m² of 16 mm polycarbonate lets out about 1,424 kWh in a year, while our panels let out around 266 kWh. Keep the room warm all season and the 1,160 kWh or so you hold on to is worth roughly £305 if you heat with electricity (26.32p per kWh) and roughly £92 with gas (7.97p per kWh), using the Ofgem cap for 1 October to 31 December 2026.
Fitting day, step by step
Your windows, doors, frames and low brick walls all stay put. We only change the covering on top, which is why the work is fast and costs a fraction of a full replacement roof with a new frame. Scaffolding is rarely needed on a single storey conservatory.
- Dust sheets go down over your floor and furniture, then the old sheets or glass units come out along with the caps and tired seals.
- Before anything new goes up, our fitters inspect every roof bar, plus the ridge and gutter beam, looking for rot, damage or movement.
- Panels cut to your survey measurements are placed on the bars and clamped under new aluminium caps with new seals.
- Trims go on at the ridge, hips and edges, the joint against the house wall is sealed, and gutters are cleared or swapped if you ordered new ones.
- We load the old roof onto the van for recycling and leave the room clean.
Because the panels are light, most uPVC and aluminium frames take them without trouble. We still inspect yours at survey, and our guide can my frame take a solid roof lists what we check. Expect 1 day for a compact lean-to or Edwardian, 1 to 2 days for a medium roof, and 2 to 3 days for a big roof or a P-shape.
Finishes, daylight and lights
The outer skin can be finished in any RAL colour, with anthracite grey and white the two most requested, and the ceiling side is white as standard. See conservatory roof colours for help matching the roof to your windows and brickwork.
A solid roof lets in less light than a clear one, so most customers add one or two roof lights at £395 each. Recessed LED spotlights in the ceiling are £345 and make the room just as useful after dark.
Prices by roof size
Because we make every roof to measure, the cost mostly follows the roof area and its shape. A rough rule is £250 to £450 per m² for a fitted panel roof.
0 to 12 m²Small roof
from£3,000
- For examplea 3 m by 3 m lean-to
- Usual price£3,200 to £3,800
- Time to fit1 day
- Warranty10 years via HomePro
12 to 25 m²Medium roof
from£4,000
- For examplea 4 m by 4 m Edwardian
- Usual price£4,200 to £4,950
- Time to fitUsually 1 day
- Warranty10 years via HomePro
25 m² and overLarge roof
from£5,000
- For examplea 6 m wide P-shape
- Usual price£5,800 to £6,850
- Time to fit2 to 3 days
- Warranty10 years via HomePro
All of these prices cover stripping and recycling the old roof, panels in the colour you choose, fitting, and the HomePro 10 year insurance backed warranty. The only optional extras are a new gutter and fascia run for £295, recessed LED spotlights for £345, and roof lights at £395 apiece. You can also spread the cost with finance through Kanda, subject to status. For a figure based on your own roof, try the price calculator or see our panel roof prices in full.
Panels against the alternatives
| Choice | U-value of roof | Rough cost, 3 m x 3 m | Drips and rain noise |
|---|---|---|---|
| Fresh polycarbonate, 16 mm to 35 mm | 1.4 to 2.3 | £2,000 to £3,500 | Drips in cold weather, noisy in a downpour |
| Replacement glass | 1.0 to 1.2 | £3,300 to £5,200 | Better than polycarbonate, not gone |
| Insulation added beneath the old roof | Varies with the product | £1,000 to £3,200 | Noise remains, the old sheet is still on top |
| Eco Tech insulated panels | Around 0.43 | From £3,000 | Mostly solves both |
| Doing nothing | Your current figure | Nothing now | Unchanged |
Fresh polycarbonate costs least on day one, but the room stays cold and loud. Glass brings in extra light along with extra summer heat. Lining the old roof from inside is cheaper than panels, yet the old covering stays up there carrying more weight, as our page on insulating a conservatory roof explains.
Do you need planning permission?
Usually not, as the conservatory keeps the same footprint and height. Speak to your council before going ahead if your home is listed, has lost its permitted development rights, or lies within a conservation area, national park or National Landscape.
Questions people ask
What is inside an Eco Tech roof panel?
Two aluminium skins with 75 mm of solid XPS foam bonded between them. The outside skin carries the colour you choose and the inside skin is white.
Will panels cure the dripping from my conservatory ceiling?
Usually, yes. The inside face of a panel sits near room temperature, so moist air has no cold surface to condense on, unlike the underside of polycarbonate or old glass.
Is a panel roof quieter in heavy rain?
Yes. The foam core soaks up the drumming when rain or hail hits, so a downpour sounds about the same as it does in your other rooms.
Do panels work on an aluminium framed conservatory?
Yes. They are light enough for most uPVC and aluminium frames, and we inspect the bars, ridge and gutter beam during the free survey before giving you a price.
How soon after the survey can you fit?
Normally within 3 to 5 weeks, which gives us time to make your panels to size and book the fitting date.
