Conservatory roof grants and finance: what help is really available?

In short

No general UK government grant pays for a new conservatory roof. National energy schemes fund lofts, walls and heating in the main house and normally leave conservatory roofs out. VAT at 0% on energy saving materials continues until March 2027, though roof panels do not usually qualify. Most homes pay £3,000 to £7,500, and many spread it with finance through Kanda, subject to status.

The short answer on grants

UK energy grants exist to lower heating bills across the whole house, mostly for households on lower incomes or properties with weak energy ratings. The money goes on loft insulation, cavity and solid wall insulation and new heating, where the saving for the home is big and easy to prove.

Conservatories fall outside that. Most are exempt from building regulations exactly because external quality doors divide them from the house and the house heating system does not extend into them. A conservatory set apart like that is usually left out of the Energy Performance Certificate as well, so a better roof does not shift the rating that most schemes use to decide who qualifies.

So at Eco Tech we say it straight: a grant is unlikely. Better to know now and plan the money properly than to hold off for help that never arrives.

Schemes customers ask us about

Scheme What it pays for Conservatory roof included?
ECO4 (Energy Company Obligation) Insulation and heating for vulnerable and low income homes, funded by energy suppliers Normally not. It is aimed at the loft, walls and heating of the house
Great British Insulation Scheme One insulation measure, such as loft or cavity wall, in lower rated homes Normally not, as above
Zero rate VAT for energy saving materials Fitted insulation and some heating measures in homes, to 31 March 2027 Panels do not usually qualify. Ask the installer how VAT is charged on your quote
Help from your council with repairs Differs between councils, mostly urgent or safety work for vulnerable owners Seldom. Contact the council if you think you may be eligible
Disabled Facilities Grant Changes that let a disabled person live safely at home Only in rare cases where the roof forms part of an approved adaptation

Rules and deadlines move, so confirm the latest on the official sites. Start with the government page on help to improve energy efficiency and HMRC's notice on VAT for energy saving materials. Scotland and Wales have separate schemes listed on their own government websites.

Be wary of grant cold callers

Each year homeowners receive phone calls, flyers and door knocks promising a "government grant" towards a new conservatory roof. No national grant like that exists. If anyone claims otherwise, get the scheme's name and look it up on gov.uk before you share personal details or hand over a deposit.

Real energy schemes never charge a fee to release a grant. A caller who wants payment first to secure funding is not genuine, so end the call.

Spreading the cost with finance

Because grants rarely apply, many of our customers prefer to pay over time. Eco Tech lets you spread the cost with finance through Kanda, a finance broker, subject to status. Mention it when you ask for a quote and we will explain how to apply once your fixed written price is agreed.

Some sensible checks before you sign any credit agreement:

  • Read the agreement in full and note the total amount you will repay, not only each payment.
  • Pick a term you are comfortable with if your circumstances change.
  • Remember the quote is fixed, so the price you finance is the price you pay for the roof, with each extra listed on its own line.

Finance does not make a roof cheaper, but it can let you have a usable room this winter instead of saving for another year. Our how we work page covers each stage from quote to fitting day.

What a roof costs with no grant

Our prices include taking away and recycling the old roof, UK made 75 mm insulated panels cut to size in your colour and the fitting work, with a 10 year insurance backed warranty through HomePro.

Size of roof Common shapes Starting price Days to fit
Small, to 12 m² Lean-to or compact Edwardian £3,000 Normally one
Medium, 12 to 25 m² Gable end, Victorian or Edwardian £4,000 One or two
Large, 25 m² upwards P-shape or big Victorian £5,000 Two or three

Most homes spend £3,000 to £7,500, about £250 to £450 per m². The shape matters as well. A lean-to costs least. Compared with that, expect roughly 6% extra for an Edwardian, 10% extra for a Victorian, 12% extra for a gable end and 16% extra for a P-shape. See the full figures on our roof panel prices page.

Fair ways to lower the bill

Choose only the extras you need

Each glazed roof light is £395, a set of LED spotlights is £345, and fresh gutters with fascia boards are £295. One or two roof lights is the usual choice. Sound gutters can often stay, and our surveyor will tell you if yours can.

Weigh up cheaper routes honestly

A fitted internal insulation system under the existing roof costs about £1,000 to £3,200, around £2,850 on average. It costs less at the start, but the old roof remains above it, along with its leaks, yellowed sheets and noise. Fresh polycarbonate costs £2,000 to £3,500 on a 3 m square roof, yet even 25 mm sheet is about 1.6 W/m²K. Our page on insulating a conservatory roof compares the routes.

Include what you save on heating

A roof is no grant, but it does reduce heat loss. Heat a 12 m² room all season with an electric heater and 16 mm polycarbonate lets out about 1,424 kWh a year, close to £375 at the 26.32p per kWh cap. Our panels, at about 0.43, let out about 266 kWh, close to £70. That is roughly £305 a year back if that is how you heat it. The gas sums are in our guide to conservatory heating costs.

Pay for one roof, not two

Polycarbonate tends to last 10 to 20 years before it discolours and leaks. Paying £2,000 to £3,500 for new sheets today and repeating the job later can add up to more than a single insulated roof.

Worth doing without help?

That rests on what the room is for. If it is too warm to sit in between May and September and too chilly from November to March, a panel roof makes it usable for most of the year. Conservatories often reach 35 to 40°C in summer, and a solid insulated roof keeps direct sun off the room. Drips mostly stop and the foam quietens rain.

If the room is just storage, or you are content with it, a grant would hardly change the decision and a cheaper repair may suit you better. Our guide on whether an insulated conservatory roof is worth it sets out the trade-offs.

Questions people ask

Is there a government grant towards replacing a conservatory roof?

No general grant covers a replacement conservatory roof. National energy schemes concentrate on the main house and normally exclude conservatory roofs.

Do conservatory roof panels qualify for 0% VAT?

Energy saving materials are zero rated for VAT until 31 March 2027, but roof panels do not usually qualify. Ask your installer how VAT is shown on your quote.

Will ECO4 pay to insulate my conservatory roof?

Normally not. Both the Great British Insulation Scheme and ECO4 fund the loft, walls and heating of the house, mainly for lower income homes or those with poor energy ratings.

A caller offered me a conservatory roof grant. Is it genuine?

No national grant like that exists. Ask which scheme it is, check that name on gov.uk, and do not pay anybody to release funding. If you want to spread the cost, ask us about finance through Kanda, subject to status.
